Headache Home Remedy

It would not be unreasonable to say that nearly everyone has suffered from headache pain at least once in his or her lifetime. It is also not unreasonable to say that people spend a fortune on over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen, to get rid of headaches when it is not really necessary. There are several headache home remedies that work just as well, if not better. They are also much safer than over-the-counter medications that can cause damage to internal organs if taken too often.

While home remedies are not usually a good idea if you are suffering from a serious migraine, most of them are effective on the occasional headache that is caused by stress or tension. Here are some headache home remedies that are recommended by both headache sufferers and physicians:

  • Believe it or not, soaking your hands and/or feet in warm or hot water will ease the pressure of a headache. This will increase the blood flow to the hands and feet while decreasing the blood flow to the head, which help reduce or eliminate the pain.
  • Place an ice pack wrapped in a towel on the forehead, temples, or back of the neck, depending on the area affected by the headache. This constricts the blood vessels, which in turn decreases the blood flow and reduces or eliminates the pain.
  • Massage can help relieve headache pain because it helps relieve muscle tightness and circulation problems, both of which are often root causes for headaches. Have someone other than yourself Apply slight pressure or gently massage your shoulders, neck, jaw, or head.
  • Avoid bright light and commotion. If daylight or the light from a lamp seems to make your headache worse, find a quiet, dark place where you can rest. Lie down, apply a damp, cold cloth to your forehead, and close your eyes. Even if you can't sleep, lie down and relax as much as possible. Although, sleep is also another way to alleviate the pain associated with headaches.
  • Take a hot shower or bath. This will relax and refresh the body, which can calm the headache.
  • Peel an apple and sprinkle salt on it. Eat one every morning for at least a week. While this remedy will not supply immediate relief for headaches, it is said to help ward them off.
  • Drink lots of water. Headaches can be caused by dehydration so keeping your body hydrated is very important. Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee or tea because they tend to contribute to dehydration.
  • If you are open to it, try a method of alternative medicine, such as aromatherapy, yoga, or acupuncture to help alleviate your headaches. Many people swear by the effectiveness of alternative medicine so it is definitely worth trying.

Having a headache shouldn't mean that you have to pay a fortune for over-the-counter pain relievers. While they do work, they can have bad side affects if they are taken too frequently. Natural home remedies are generally more economical and much safer.
