Five All Natural Remedies For A Toothache

People have suffered with toothaches since the beginning of time but they have not always had the option of going to the dentist or taking painkillers to help alleviate them. They either suffered through the pain or they found a way to ease it with natural home remedies. Today, we have come a long way as far as modern medicine goes but for many natural home remedies are a safer and more effective way to get relief. Below is a list of five home remedies for a toothache that are or are made from all natural ingredients:

  • One of the oldest home remedies for a toothache is to chew a couple of cloves with the affected tooth. Cloves have natural antibacterial and pain relieving properties that work wonders on a toothache. If chewing on cloves is too painful, you can also apply a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil to 3 drops of clove oil to the affected tooth. Soak a cotton ball or gauze with the mixture and place it directly on the tooth that is bothering you. You can hold the gauze or cotton ball in place by gently clenching your teeth down on it. Leave on for 10 or 15 minutes or until the pain starts to subside.
  • A saltwater rinse helps eliminate germs and loosen any food particles that may be stuck in the teeth. It will also help promote healing in the infected tooth/teeth and gums. Mix one teaspoon of salt into a 4-ounce glass of lukewarm water. Swish around the entire mouth for a minute or so and then spit it out. Repeat this process until the entire mixture is gone. You should do this after each meal or when there is pain present.

  • Try chewing on a piece of onion 4 to 5 minutes several times a day. You can also place a small piece of onion directly on the affected tooth. The juice from onions is said to kill bacteria and relieve toothache pain. Your breath will smell terrible afterwards but if it takes care of the tooth pain it is worth it right?
  • Ice is very effective in relieving pain and swelling that is associated with a toothache. If it is not too painful to do so, place an ice cube directly on the offending tooth. Otherwise, put several ice cubes into a plastic bag and wrap it in a kitchen towel. An ice pack wrapped in a kitchen towel will also work well. Place the ice pack on the cheek in the area of the toothache and hold it there for at least fifteen minutes. This should help numb the pain. Note that you should never use a warm compress for a toothache because if there is an infection present it could cause it to spread.
  • Garlic is said to be another excellent home remedy for a toothache. Chew or suck on a peeled clove of garlic for 5 minutes. If you would rather, you can also rub the affected area with the clove of garlic. Some say that mixing the garlic clove with rock salt and applying it to the tooth is also effective. With any of the above, your mouth and gums will burn or throb for a short while because garlic is spicy. You should also be aware that your breath could be ghastly afterward.

Suffering with a toothache can be excruciating and unnecessary. Try one or two of the home remedies listed above. Our grandparents and their grandparents before them relied on them for effective pain relief so there is something to be said about them. They are safe, easy, and inexpensive to use.
