Home Remedy for Snoring

Snoring can be extremely annoying and it can deeply affect your quality of life. Not only can snoring interrupt your sleep it can also cause constant fatigue, irritability, and believe it or not, depression. It can affect your ability to think clearly or concentrate during the day and it can also have a negative impact on your personal relationships with others.

There are several medical procedures and devices that your doctor can recommend to help alleviate snoring. Unfortunately, they are usually very expensive and if you do not have health insurance, they are unobtainable. There are, however, some home remedies for snoring that you can try that might just work for you.

Before trying any type of medication or alternative concoction for snoring, try making some simple lifestyle changes:

  • If you smoke, kick the habit. Smoking causes congestion, which contributes to snoring.
  • Do not drink alcohol for at least three hours before you go to bed.
  • Avoid sleeping on you back. Sleep on your side instead. If necessary, find some way to block yourself from rolling onto your back while you are sleeping. People who sleep on their backs are much more likely to snore.
  • If you are overweight, try losing a few pounds. You would be surprised at how much being overweight can contribute to a snoring problem.
  • Try to avoid taking any type of sleeping pill or sedative. These will cause you to relax too much which can also contribute to a snoring problem.
  • Never eat a heavy meal before bedtime. It is best to eat your last meal of the day at least three or four hours before you go to bed. A small snack an hour or so before you go to bed should not have any impact on a snoring problem but eating a heavy meal will.
  • Get lots of exercise. This will tone your muscles and help you lose weight, which will both help eliminate snoring.

If after trying all of the above suggestions you still find yourself snoring, you may want to try a home remedy for snoring. Here are some of the remedies that many have found to work well for them:

  • Sometimes dry air can contribute to snoring so try running a steam vaporizer or a humidifier while you are sleeping. This will add moisture to the air, which will in turn help moisturize your throat and nasal passages. Another option is to hold a towel over the back of your head and place your head over a pot of hot, steaming water. Inhale the steam deeply.
  • Aromatherapy is another popular home remedy for snoring because it helps relax the respiratory system. Marjoram oil is said to be one of the best essential oils for alleviating snoring. Talk to an aroma therapist about essential oil blends that might also work well for snoring.
  • Talk to an herbalist about natural plant enzymes and herbs that can help break down nasal and chest congestion. Certain herbs can help reduce nasal and throat inflammation, which in turn opens up the airways and eliminates snoring.
  • Acupressure is said to be a fantastic cure for snoring. There are several products available that can be used to apply pressure to specific points on the body, such as rings, clips, and wristbands. Many people have tried and swear by acupressure for snoring problems.

It should be noted, that not all snoring problems are due to the way you live or your environment. In some cases, snoring can be dangerous and sometimes even fatal. Snoring can be a side affect of sleep apnea where the person stops breathing repeatedly while they are sleeping. This can be caused, among other things, by an obstruction in the breathing tract, an unusually narrow throat, or a neurological problem. If you suspect that your snoring may be due to any of the above, go see your doctor. The chances of a home remedy working for any of them are slim to none. You will need some sort of medical intervention.

By making simple lifestyle changes and/or trying a home remedy or two, you may just find that your snoring is a thing of the past. Before trying any of the alternative remedies, such as aromatherapy, herbs, and acupressure, you may want to consult someone who is well informed about them but by all means give them a try. It might be the best thing you have done for yourself in a long time.
