Natural Remedy For Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are one the most common physical ailments in today's society. Close to ten million people suffer from them in America alone. They can afflict both children and adults although they are more common in adults. As painful and irritating as they can be, many will not seek medical help for them because they are embarrassed. Fortunately, there are natural remedies for hemorrhoids that can be used without having to go through embarrassing exams and treatments.

Knowing what hemorrhoids are and what causes them can play a vital part of treating them. Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and inflamed veins located in the rectum and anus. They can be very painful and itchy and they can bleed. Some can be more severe than others and in extreme cases they may require surgery. There are many causes for them including genetic predisposition, diet, constipation, physical strain on the body, sitting for extended periods of time, stress, and even pregnancy.

There are an array of different natural remedies for Hemorrhoids that can be used in the privacy of your own home. If possible, correct the problem that is causing the hemorrhoids to begin with:

  • If you are experiencing chronic constipation try adding more fiber and water to your diet. A lack of fiber and dehydration can both be causes for constipation, which can in turn cause hemorrhoids. Fiber will help loosen or soften the stool while water will lubricate it so that it moves through the colon more smoothly.

  • Do not sit for extended periods of time if at all possible. If you are required to sit for long periods of time try getting up and moving around periodically. This will help alleviate some of the pressure that causes hemorrhoids to begin with.
  • Be sure to use proper lifting techniques when lifting heavy objects to help avoid physical strain that can also cause hemorrhoids. Also, don't over do it when performing hard physical labor. If you feel like you are overdoing it, take a break and let your body relax and rejuvenate.

If the underlying cause or your hemrrhoids is something that you can do nothing about, such as pregnancy or genetic predisposition, you might be able to obtain relief from one of these natural hemorrhoid remedies:

  • Use a Witch Hazel Compress or Cream to help alleviate the pain, swelling, and itching.

  • Because it acts as a natural astringent, Witch Hazel is also said to help decrease the bleeding associated with hemorrhoids. Apply it directly to the affected area.

  • Use a topical application, either the ointment or a compress, of butcher's broom. Butcher's broom's main ingredient, Ruscogen, is an extract that has anti-inflammatory properties that are said to strengthen weakened veins and shrink swollen tissue. If you are pregnant, seek the advice of you physician before using this remedy.

  • Sit in a warm Epsom salt bath for fifteen minutes several times a day. The Epsom salt will help alleviate some of the swelling. While this remedy does not cure the hemorrhoids, it is very soothing to itchy, inflamed tissue.

  • Use an ice pack to help reduce swollen hemorrhoids.

  • Apply the juice of an Aloe Vera plant directly to the affected area. It can help alleviate the burning and irritation associated with hemorrhoids.

These are just a few of the natural remedies that you can use to help alleviate the discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. If these do not work for you, there are many more to be found on the Internet, in your local library, or even at your doctor's office. In many cases, hemorrhoids will go away without medical attention but occasionally it is necessary. If you are finding that nothing works and you are still suffering, seek professional help.
